Facelift overview
What is a facelift
A facelift is a form of cosmetic surgery that addresses sagging skin and other signs of aging in the face. The facelift procedure uses two small incisions on either side of the face, which the surgeon will use to lift the facial skin, tissues, and muscles. If necessary, the plastic surgeon will remove excess skin from the face. The result is firmer skin that looks more youthful. A facelift is often paired with a neck lift, which uses similar techniques to address sagging skin in the neck and jowls.

Facelift candidacy
Am I a candidate for a facelift?
The best facelift candidates are patients with significant sagging or drooping in the facial tissues that they want to correct. In most cases, patients are over the age of 50.
As with other forms of plastic surgery, patients will need to be in generally good health, with no underlying conditions that could interfere with surgery. Patients should also be non-smokers or willing to quit smoking several months prior to surgery.
Facelift candidates should also have a positive outlook and realistic expectations for the procedure. While a facelift can correct many signs of aging, it won’t change the entire shape of your face or address underlying self-esteem issues.

Benefits
of the facelift
- Removes Loose or Sagging Skin It’s normal for the skin on your face to droop or sag as you age. A facelift will tighten or remove this loose skin, restoring a more youthful look.
- Minimizes Folds in the Face and Neck While a facelift can’t completely eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, it will minimize the look of deeper folds in the face. Facelifts are particularly effective for correcting smile lines and marionette lines.
- Efficient Results A facelift is an efficient way to address many signs of aging in one procedure. Many patients even pair a facelift with other procedures, like a neck lift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery, to correct signs of aging even more quickly.
- Improves Confidence A facelift can help you feel more confident in the way you look. Many patients find that they are more confident trying new makeup trends or hairstyles with a more youthful appearance.

What to expect before and during
Your facelift procedure
Prior to your facelift, we will have a consultation with you to discuss your expectations and prepare you for surgery. We will also conduct a brief health screening to make sure you are a good candidate for the procedure.
A facelift is typically conducted under general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep for the procedure. You will need to avoid eating or drinking for several hours before the procedure, as this could interfere with the anesthesia.
The facelift is usually an outpatient procedure, which means you will get to return home on the day of your surgery. However, you will be disoriented from the anesthesia, so you will need to have a friend or family member drive you to and from the surgery. Most facelift procedures take two to six hours to complete.
What to Expect After
Recovery
Once you arrive home, you will need help with basic tasks around the house for the first few days after surgery. You will need to rest for the first few days and allow your body to heal. We recommend that you take time off of work for the first one to two weeks after surgery.
You will have dressings on your incisions, which you will need to monitor and change according to our instructions. You will also experience bruising and swelling, and some patients experience a tingling sensation. These symptoms will peak around the second or third day after surgery and slowly subside afterward. Using ice packs can help keep swelling under control.
Pain and discomfort are most intense during the first four days after surgery. We will prescribe pain medication as needed to keep you comfortable.
Facelift patients will need to sleep on their backs with their heads elevated during the initial recovery period. This keeps swelling to a minimum and avoids putting stress on your incisions. Special surgical pillows can help keep you comfortable during this time.
After the first week, you will likely be ready to resume some of your daily activities, although you should still take care to avoid exercise or strenuous activities. You will likely still experience some swelling and bruising, although they will be much less visible.
