What is a Facelift?
A facelift is a surgical procedure to repair sagging, drooping, and wrinkled skin of the face and neck. The procedure can be done alone or combined with nose reshaping, a forehead lift, or eyelid surgery. To further enhance the jawline and achieve profile balance, many patients also combine a facelift with chin augmentation.
Why People Choose a Facelift
Sagging or wrinkled skin occurs naturally as you get older. Folds and fat deposits appear around the neck. Deep creases form between the nose and mouth. The jawline grows jowly and slack. Genetics and lifestyle factors (including sun exposure and smoking) can contribute to earlier or more noticeable skin and soft-tissue aging. A facelift can help improve some of the visible signs of aging. Fixing damage to skin, fat, and muscles can restore a younger, more refreshed and less tired look.

Types of Facelift
There are several different types of facelift surgery available. The right option for you will depend on the areas of the face you most want to address and the degree of correction needed.
Standard Facelift
The traditional facelift addresses moderate to severe sagging throughout the face and neck. Incisions are made along the hairline at the temples, extending around the ear and into the lower scalp.
Mini Facelift
A mini facelift may involve shorter incisions and can focus on early jowling and lower-face laxity. This less invasive option is ideal for patients with early signs of aging who want subtle improvement.
Deep Plane Facelift
The deep plane facelift releases and repositions the deeper facial tissues, including the SMAS layer and fat compartments, as a single composite unit. This approach can provide substantial midface and jawline improvement.
Compare Facelift Techniques
| Technique | Best For | What It Targets | Typical Tradeoff | Often Paired With |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mini Facelift | Early jowling, mild lower-face laxity | Lower face/jawline | Subtler change; not ideal for significant neck laxity | Light neck contouring, skin treatments |
| Standard Facelift | Moderate to severe lower-face + neck aging | Jawline, jowls, neck (often) | More recovery than mini; broader incision pattern | Neck lift commonly |
| Deep Plane Facelift Recommended | Midface descent + deeper structural sagging | Midface, nasolabial area, jawline | More technically demanding | Neck lift; sometimes fat grafting |
| Facelift + Neck Lift | Visible neck laxity, banding, heavier neck | Jawline-to-neck transition | Added surgical scope; slightly longer recovery | Often combined with facelift above |

Am I a Candidate for a Facelift?
People have a facelift because they are not satisfied with the signs of aging on their face, but they are in otherwise good health. Many facelift patients are in midlife and beyond, but candidacy depends more on facial anatomy, degree of laxity, and overall health than age alone.
Patients with discrete jowl or neck fat and only mild-to-moderate skin laxity — closer to the early end of the aging spectrum — may be candidates for a less invasive alternative: VASER ultrasound liposuction combined with Renuvion helium-plasma skin tightening, an in-office procedure performed under local anesthesia. Dr. Troell's 58-patient published study in The American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery documents the technique, recovery, and safety profile.

Facelift FAQs
Isn't a facelift just a facelift? Why does the surgeon matter?
Two surgeons can perform the same type of facelift with dramatically different results. The difference lies in surgical technique, anatomical understanding, aesthetic judgment, and attention to detail. Board certification, fellowship training in facial plastic surgery, and extensive experience with facelift procedures are important factors when choosing your surgeon.
What is the difference between a deep plane and SMAS facelift?
SMAS techniques work on the superficial musculoaponeurotic system layer through various approaches — tightening, folding, or removing portions of this tissue. A deep plane facelift goes beneath the SMAS, releasing retaining ligaments and lifting the skin, fat, and SMAS as a single composite unit.
Will I look "overdone" or unnatural?
Modern facelift techniques, particularly the deep plane approach, aim to lift tissues vertically rather than pulling horizontally. This can help preserve natural facial expression and avoid an over-pulled appearance. Dr. Troell's philosophy emphasizes natural-looking rejuvenation.
How long does it take to heal from a facelift?
The initial healing period takes about four to six weeks, during which bruising and swelling will subside. However, it takes about six months before the final results become visible as all swelling resolves and tissues settle.
What should I avoid after a facelift?
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, strenuous exercise, bending, and lifting, as well as anything that puts pressure on the face. Avoid wearing makeup or glasses until you get permission from your surgeon.
How long does a facelift last?
Results can last for many years, though aging continues and individual longevity varies based on anatomy, technique, lifestyle, and skin quality. While a facelift corrects existing signs of aging, it won't stop future aging. However, you will always look younger than you would have without the procedure.
What is the difference between a mini facelift and a full facelift?
A mini facelift uses shorter incisions and focuses primarily on the lower face and jowls, making it ideal for patients with early signs of aging. A full facelift uses longer incisions and addresses more extensive sagging throughout the face and neck.
Can a facelift be combined with other procedures?
Yes. A facelift can be done alone or combined with nose reshaping, a forehead lift, or eyelid surgery for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Many patients also combine a facelift with a neck lift for optimal results.
Will I have visible scars after a facelift?
Most surgical scars are hidden in the hairline or natural lines of the face and will fade over time. Dr. Troell uses meticulous surgical techniques to minimize scarring, and scars continue to improve for up to a year after surgery.
Is a facelift an outpatient procedure?
Yes, many facelifts are performed as outpatient procedures. You will return home on the day of your surgery. You will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from the surgery.
