What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are hyaluronic acid (HA) injectable products specifically formulated for the lips. They restore lost volume, refine lip shape, smooth perioral lines, and create more even or fuller lip contours — all reversible with hyaluronidase if you ever want to undo the change.

Modern lip-specific fillers are softer, more flexible, and integrate more naturally with the dynamic movement of the lips compared to general dermal fillers. Different lip filler products have different "weights" — thinner products (Volbella, RHA 2) for subtle enhancement, slightly thicker products (Kysse, Juvederm Ultra) for more visible volume.

Lip-Specific Filler Products

Juvederm Volbella

Allergan’s lip-specific HA filler. Soft, smooth, low-water-attracting formulation that produces minimal swelling. Best for subtle enhancement, perioral fine lines, and first-time lip filler patients. Lasts 6-12 months.

Restylane Kysse

Galderma’s flexible lip filler with cross-linked HA designed to move naturally with facial expression. Slightly more visible volume than Volbella. Lasts 9-12 months.

RHA 2

Resilient HA collection — designed to flex with dynamic facial movement. Very natural look that’s particularly good for animated patients. Lasts 9-12 months.

Juvederm Ultra XC

Slightly thicker product for patients seeking more dramatic volume. Best for thinner natural lips that need more material to achieve desired shape. Lasts 9-12 months.

Am I a Good Candidate for Lip Fillers?

Lip filler candidates are healthy adults seeking natural lip enhancement, restoration of age-related lip volume loss, smoothing of perioral fine lines, or refinement of lip shape and symmetry. The procedure is reversible (HA fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase), making it lower-commitment than surgical alternatives like lip implants.

Patients should not be pregnant, nursing, or have an active cold sore outbreak (HSV-1) at the time of treatment. A history of cold sores is not a contraindication, but antiviral prophylaxis is recommended. Patients with significant lip asymmetry from prior procedures or anatomic variation may need a phased approach — starting with smaller volumes to assess response.

Dr. Troell’s philosophy: subtle, age-appropriate refinement — never overdone. If you want a dramatic "duck lip" look, this is not the practice for that.

Why Patients Choose Lip Fillers

Immediate Results

You leave your appointment with visible volume in place. Most swelling resolves within 1-2 weeks — final shape is visible around day 7-14.

Reversible

HA-based lip fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if you’re unhappy with results. This safety net is unique to HA fillers and one of the main reasons they’re the dominant choice for first-time lip filler patients.

Quick & Convenient

Most lip filler appointments take 30-45 minutes total (including topical numbing time). No required downtime. You can return to work the same day.

Natural Refinement

Modern lip-specific products are designed to integrate naturally with lip movement. Done correctly, friends and family notice you look refreshed but can’t identify what changed.

What to Expect During Your Lip Filler Appointment

The appointment begins with a brief consultation to discuss your lip goals and the right product for your anatomy. Topical numbing cream is applied for 15-20 minutes. Dr. Troell may also use a dental block (intra-oral injection) for additional comfort, particularly for larger volumes or sensitive patients.

The injections themselves take 10-20 minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as moderate pressure with brief pinches. Cannulas (blunt-tip) are often used in the lips to reduce bruising and increase safety. After treatment, ice is applied to minimize swelling.

You can return to your normal routine immediately. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours, avoiding alcohol for 24 hours, and avoiding extreme heat (saunas, hot yoga) for 24 hours. Stay upright as much as possible for the first 4 hours.

What to Expect After Lip Filler

Lips swell more than other facial areas after filler — this is normal and expected. Day 1-3: visible swelling that may make lips look fuller than your final result. Day 4-7: most swelling resolves; you can begin to see your true lip shape emerging. Day 7-14: final shape becomes apparent as residual swelling resolves and the filler integrates with surrounding tissue.

Some bruising is possible at injection sites — usually small and easy to cover with lipstick. Take arnica before and after if you bruise easily; avoid blood thinners for 48 hours pre-treatment.

Touch-up appointments are typically scheduled 2-3 weeks after initial treatment if any volume adjustments are needed. Maintenance refills are typically 6-12 months apart depending on the product, your metabolism, and your goals.

Lip Fillers Safety Profile

Lip filler injection is a low-risk in-office procedure. Side effects are generally limited to swelling and bruising.

  • Bruising or swelling. Common, mild, resolves within days.
  • Mild redness or tenderness. Expected at injection or treatment site.
  • Allergic reaction. Rare; typically limited to the treatment area.
  • Asymmetry or under/over-correction. Can be addressed at follow-up.
  • Infection. Very rare with proper aseptic technique.

A complete risk discussion is part of every consultation. Dr. Troell will review your specific risk profile based on your health history, medications, and treatment area.

Lip Fillers vs Surgical Lip Procedures

Lip fillers add temporary volume (6-12 months) to enhance shape and softness. For patients seeking permanent shape changes — particularly to the relationship between the upper lip and nose — Dr. Troell also offers surgical lip procedures.

  • Lip Lift: A permanent surgical procedure that shortens the distance between the nose and upper lip, enhancing the visible vermillion (pink) edge of the lip.
  • Bellafill: Semi-permanent (5+ years) volume — for patients ready to commit to longer correction without surgery.
  • Fat Transfer to Lips: Permanent volume using your own purified fat — natural feel, no synthetic material.

Most patients begin with non-surgical options to establish a treatment pattern, then consider surgical alternatives based on their longer-term goals. Dr. Troell will walk you through the right starting point at your consultation.

Lip Filler FAQs

How long do lip fillers last?

Most lip fillers last 6-12 months. Volbella tends to last 6-9 months in active patients. Kysse, RHA 2, and Juvederm Ultra typically last 9-12 months. Touch-ups every 6-12 months maintain the look.

Can I get lip fillers reversed if I don’t like them?

Yes — HA-based lip fillers (which are the only types we offer for lips) are reversible with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid. Reversal takes 24-48 hours to take full effect. This safety net is one of the main reasons HA fillers are the dominant choice for lip enhancement.

Will my lips look natural?

Dr. Troell’s philosophy is subtle, age-appropriate refinement. Most patients receive 0.5-1 mL per session, which produces visible but natural-looking enhancement. We do not perform "duck lip" or extremely overfilled requests — if that’s your aesthetic goal, this practice is not the right fit.

Do lip filler injections hurt?

Topical numbing cream is applied 15-20 minutes before injection. Dr. Troell may also use a dental block (intra-oral injection) for additional comfort. Most patients describe the sensation as moderate pressure with brief pinches — well-tolerated, not severe pain.

How much swelling should I expect?

Lips swell more than other facial areas after filler. Day 1-3 will look fuller than your final result. Day 4-7 most swelling resolves. By day 14 your true final shape emerges. Plan around social events accordingly — we recommend not getting lip filler within 2 weeks of a wedding, photo shoot, or major event.

When should I choose lip filler vs. lip lift surgery?

Lip filler adds volume and refines shape without changing underlying lip structure. Lip lift (a surgical procedure) shortens the distance between the nose and upper lip, making the upper lip appear fuller and more youthful by changing structure. Lip filler is reversible and good for ongoing maintenance; lip lift is permanent and good for patients with significant philtrum length. Many patients use both modalities at different points.
