Body Lift After Weight Loss in Las Vegas

Lower body lift, arm lift and thigh lift for the loose skin major weight loss leaves behind — performed by Dr. Robert J. Troell, MD, FACS

What Is a Body Lift?

A body lift — known clinically as a belt lipectomy or circumferential body lift — removes the loose, inelastic skin that major weight loss leaves behind and re-drapes what remains over the new, smaller frame. Where liposuction treats excess fat, a body lift treats excess skin: the apron at the waistline, the folds of the lower back and flanks, and the laxity that no amount of further weight loss or exercise will retract.

Patients arrive at this operation from different roads — GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, bariatric surgery, or years of disciplined diet and training. The destination is the same: a body that has done something remarkable, wearing skin sized for the body it used to be. Related operations treat the same problem in other zones — an arm lift (brachioplasty) for hanging skin of the upper arms and a thigh lift for the inner thighs — and this page covers all three.

At Troell Cosmetic Surgery, body lift surgery is performed by Dr. Robert J. Troell, MD, FACS, a Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) and of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS), practising in Las Vegas with over 30 years of surgical experience. The practice operates from its office at 5375 S Fort Apache Road in Spring Valley, serving patients from Summerlin, Henderson, Enterprise, Southern Highlands and across the Las Vegas Valley.

Who a Body Lift Helps

The one-line test: if you can pinch it and it stays folded, it is skin; if it is firm and rounded, it is fat. Skin excess is a body lift problem. Fat excess is a liposuction problem — and many patients have some of both. The pattern Dr. Troell hears most often in consultation after major weight loss includes:

  • A skin apron (pannus) over the waistband that persists no matter how much more weight comes off.
  • Rolls and folds of the lower back and flanks that make fitted clothing sit wrong even though the scale reads right.
  • Skin irritation and rashes inside the folds — recurrent in the desert summer, where heat and moisture make intertrigo hard to clear.
  • Hanging skin of the upper arms that shows in short sleeves and moves independently of the arm.
  • Inner-thigh laxity that chafes with walking or running.
  • A finish-line feeling that never arrives — the weight goal is met, but the mirror still shows the old body's envelope.

Good candidates have held a stable weight for roughly six to twelve months — operating while weight is still moving surrenders the result — are in stable general health, are non-smokers or willing to stop well before surgery, and hold realistic expectations about scars, which are long, permanent, and the deliberate trade this operation makes. Whether a body lift is appropriate, and which zones to treat in what order, is a clinical judgement made in consultation, not from a photograph or a web page.

What Body Lift Surgery Involves

“Body lift” is a family of operations rather than a single one. Each removes a measured ellipse of skin and fat, then closes the remaining tissue under controlled tension so the contour is smooth rather than stretched. Which zones are treated — and whether in one operation or staged — is set by anatomy, health and recovery capacity.

The operations

  • Lower body lift (belt lipectomy) — a circumferential excision around the waistline that addresses the abdominal apron, flanks, lower back and, through the same closure, provides some elevation of the outer thigh and buttock tissue. This is the centerpiece operation after massive weight loss.
  • Arm lift (brachioplasty) — removes the hanging skin of the upper arm through an incision placed along the inner arm, from armpit toward the elbow as the excess dictates.
  • Thigh lift — removes inner-thigh laxity through an incision in the groin crease, extending down the inner thigh only where the excess requires it.
  • Abdominal-only patterns — where the excess is limited to the front, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or a skin-apron-only excision may be the better-scoped operation than a full circumferential lift.

Combined contouring

Where residual fat sits alongside the skin excess, VASER liposuction is often performed in the same session to thin and shape before the skin is re-draped, and helium-plasma (Renuvion) skin tightening can support zones with milder laxity. Dr. Troell has published peer-reviewed work on combining third-generation ultrasound liposuction with Renuvion skin tightening, and on lipoabdominoplasty technique — the adjacent operations this surgery draws on.

Anesthesia and setting

Circumferential body lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Troell’s practice is known for its awake, local-anesthetic approach to a number of body-contouring procedures — and select smaller components can be handled that way — but the anesthetic plan for a body lift is set case by case at consultation rather than assumed.

Insurance and Payment

Troell Cosmetic Surgery is a self-pay (cash-pay) practice. We do not accept or bill insurance for any procedure — including panniculectomy and skin-removal surgery after weight loss, and including cases that another practice might submit as medically indicated.

We put this near the top of the page deliberately. Skin-removal surgery after massive weight loss is often discussed alongside insurance coverage, and it is not fair to let a patient invest time in a consultation before learning how the practice works. If insurance billing is essential to your decision, you are better served by a practice that participates with your plan, and we would rather tell you that now.

For patients who proceed on a self-pay basis, the fee is quoted in writing after an in-person evaluation, and financing options are discussed at that time.

Why Choose Dr. Troell for a Body Lift

Post-weight-loss surgery rewards judgement about tension and blood supply more than any single technique. The decisions that determine the result — how much skin can safely come out, where the closure line should sit so clothing covers it, when to stage rather than combine, how much liposuction the tissue will tolerate in the same session — are made from experience across the whole body-contouring set.

Dr. Robert J. Troell is a Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS), a Diplomate of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS), a Diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He has practised in Las Vegas for over 30 years and trained at the University of South Florida and Stanford University, where he later served as a Clinical Professor.

His published, peer-reviewed work sits directly beside this operation: a twenty-year learned experience in liposuction, a comparative study of lipoabdominoplasty technique, work on combining ultrasound liposuction with Renuvion helium-plasma skin tightening, and a personal approach to abdominoplasty. In the interest of being straight with you: those papers are in liposuction and abdominal contouring, not in circumferential body lift specifically. What he brings to a body lift is three decades of operative experience across the contouring set and board credentials — you can review his published work and decide for yourself.

Consultations are with Dr. Troell — not a patient coordinator — and the surgical plan is his.

Body Contouring Before & After

Contouring results are best judged on real patients rather than on renderings. Our gallery shows consented before-and-after cases from Dr. Troell’s practice, photographed in consistent positions so the change in contour is visible. Dedicated body-lift case photographs are reviewed with you at consultation.

Every patient heals differently and no result shown should be read as a prediction of your own.

What Determines the Cost of a Body Lift in Las Vegas?

We do not publish a price for body lift surgery, because a number quoted before an examination is a guess. The fee is set after an in-person evaluation and given to you in writing. What moves it:

  • Zones treated — a circumferential lower body lift, an arm lift, a thigh lift, or a combination, each with its own operative scope.
  • One stage or several — staging changes the total but protects safety and recovery when the plan is large.
  • Anesthesia and facility time, billed by duration.
  • Combined procedures — adding liposuction or Renuvion skin tightening in the same session changes both the total and the recovery.
  • Post-operative garments, drains and follow-up, which are part of the quoted plan rather than a surprise afterwards.

As above, the practice is self-pay; see Insurance and Payment. For a broader orientation to the options after major weight loss, see our guide to body contouring after weight loss.

Body Lift Recovery Timeline

A circumferential body lift is a larger recovery than most cosmetic operations, and honest framing helps you plan for it. Timelines below are typical for a lower body lift, not guaranteed; arm and thigh lifts alone run shorter.

  • Days 1–7: soreness and tightness through the waistline; walking — slightly bent at first — begins immediately; surgical drains and a compression garment are managed at home.
  • Weeks 1–2: drains are typically removed as output falls; most patients are off prescription pain medication and moving comfortably around the house.
  • Weeks 2–3: many return to desk work. Driving resumes once off prescription pain medication and comfortable at the wheel.
  • Weeks 4–6: gradual return to cardiovascular exercise; the compression garment is typically worn through this period.
  • Weeks 6–8: most patients resume unrestricted activity, including lifting and impact exercise, once cleared.
  • Months 3–18: swelling settles and the contour takes its final shape. Scars are firm and pink early, then soften and fade over 12–18 months.

Scars are long and permanent — a lower body lift’s scar runs around the waistline where a waistband generally covers it. Scar care begins once the incisions have healed.

Body Lift FAQs

No. Troell Cosmetic Surgery is a self-pay practice and does not accept or bill insurance for any procedure, including panniculectomy and skin-removal surgery after weight loss, and including cases another practice might submit as medically indicated. If insurance participation is essential to your decision, we would rather you know before booking a consultation.

Liposuction removes fat; a body lift removes skin. After major weight loss the primary problem is usually skin — loose, inelastic and folded — which no amount of liposuction corrects. Many patients need some of both, which is why liposuction is often performed in the same session as the lift.

Once your weight has been stable for roughly six to twelve months. Operating while weight is still falling surrenders the result — more loss creates new laxity behind the closure — and operating too early after bariatric surgery competes with your body’s nutritional recovery. The timing call is made at consultation with your history in front of us.

Sometimes, but not always safely. The zones treated, your health, and total operative time decide whether the plan is one operation or staged operations spaced months apart. Staging is not a sales device — it is how large post-weight-loss plans are kept safe and how each stage protects the previous one’s result.

A lower body lift leaves a scar that runs around the waistline, placed where a waistband generally covers it. An arm lift’s scar runs along the inner arm; a thigh lift’s sits in the groin crease, extending down the inner thigh only as far as the excess requires. All are permanent — they are the trade this operation makes, and they fade substantially over 12–18 months.

The removed skin is gone permanently. What remains still ages and still responds to weight change — a stable weight protects the result, and a significant regain-and-loss cycle can recreate laxity. That is why weight stability comes before surgery rather than after it.

Larger than most cosmetic operations, and manageable when planned honestly. Expect drains and a compression garment in the first weeks, walking from day one, desk work around weeks two to three, exercise from weeks four to six, and unrestricted activity by six to eight weeks once cleared. Swelling and scar maturation continue for months afterward.

Often, yes. VASER liposuction thins and shapes zones of residual fat before the skin is re-draped, and Renuvion helium-plasma tightening can support areas with milder laxity. Dr. Troell has published on both technologies; whether they belong in your plan is an anatomy decision made at consultation.
