Gynecomastia Surgery in Las Vegas
Gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) corrects enlarged male breast tissue using VASER liposuction, direct gland excision, or a combined approach — producing a flat, masculine chest contour.
What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia — the medical term for enlarged male breast tissue — affects an estimated 30% of men at some point in their lives. It can result from hormonal changes during puberty, certain medications, weight changes, or genetics. While not dangerous, gynecomastia can significantly affect self-confidence and limit activities like swimming or going shirtless.
Surgical correction is the only definitive treatment for established gynecomastia. Dr. Robert Troell uses VASER ultrasound-assisted liposuction to selectively remove fatty tissue while sparing surrounding structures, combined with direct excision of glandular tissue when needed. The combination produces a flat, masculine chest contour with minimal scarring and faster recovery than traditional excisional approaches alone.
Performed in our AAAASF-accredited Las Vegas surgical facility under Dr. Troell's direct care.
Gynecomastia Surgery Explained
Dr. Troell walks through the gynecomastia surgical approach — VASER liposuction technique, glandular excision, and what patients can expect.
Gynecomastia Surgery Techniques
VASER Liposuction Alone
For predominantly fatty (pseudogynecomastia) cases — ultrasound-assisted liposuction selectively breaks down and removes fat with minimal trauma.
Glandular Excision
Direct surgical removal of dense glandular breast tissue through a small periareolar (around the nipple) incision.
Combined VASER + Excision
Most cases benefit from combined approach: VASER to remove fat + small glandular excision through periareolar incision. Produces the most uniform contour.
Candidacy
Strong candidates for gynecomastia surgery typically have:
- Persistent enlarged male breast tissue. Despite weight loss, exercise, or addressing underlying causes (medication changes, hormonal evaluation).
- Stable adult weight. Within 10-15 lbs of long-term weight to ensure lasting results.
- Well-defined goals. A flatter, more masculine chest contour without disproportion.
- Healthy non-smokers. Or willing to quit 4+ weeks pre-op for optimal healing.
- Realistic expectations. Understanding that minor scarring around the areola is unavoidable for excisional cases; nipple-area sensation may be temporarily altered.
Dr. Troell will evaluate your goals at your consultation to determine the right approach.
Why Patients Choose Gynecomastia Surgery
- Permanent removal of breast tissue. Once removed, glandular tissue does not regenerate.
- Flat, masculine chest contour. Restored proportion and confidence to go shirtless, swim, exercise.
- Minimal scarring. VASER incisions are tiny puncture sites; excision scars hide in the natural areolar border.
- Quick recovery. Most patients return to desk work within 5-7 days; full activity at 4-6 weeks.
- Significant psychological benefit. Many patients describe immediate increase in self-confidence after gynecomastia surgery.

Surgical Risks & Recovery Considerations
Gynecomastia surgery is generally well-tolerated with a low complication rate. Risks below are uncommon when proper surgical technique and post-operative care are followed.
- Bleeding or hematoma. Uncommon; managed with surgical drainage if it occurs.
- Infection. Rare with proper technique and antibiotic prophylaxis.
- Scarring. All surgical procedures produce some scarring. Scars typically fade significantly over 12-18 months.
- Asymmetry. Subtle asymmetry can occur and may require minor revision.
- Anesthesia risks. General risks associated with anesthesia administration in healthy patients.
- Suboptimal results. Final outcomes depend on individual healing, anatomy, and adherence to post-op instructions.
A complete risk discussion is part of every surgical consultation. Dr. Troell will review your specific risk profile and answer any questions before scheduling.

Gynecomastia Surgery FAQ
What causes gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia results from hormonal imbalance, certain medications (anabolic steroids, some prescription drugs), weight gain, marijuana use, or genetics. Many cases that develop during puberty resolve naturally; cases that persist into adulthood typically require surgical correction.
Will it come back after surgery?
No — once breast tissue is removed surgically, it does not regenerate. However, significant weight gain after surgery can re-deposit fat in the chest area. The glandular tissue itself does not return.
Can I just lose weight to fix this?
Weight loss helps if the chest fullness is purely fat (pseudogynecomastia). However, true gynecomastia involves dense glandular tissue that does not respond to diet or exercise. Surgery is the only definitive treatment for the glandular component.
Will I have visible scars?
VASER-only cases leave only tiny puncture-site scars (essentially invisible). Combined excisional cases have a small scar hidden along the lower edge of the areola where the color transition naturally hides it. Both heal very well in male skin.
How long is recovery?
Most patients return to desk work within 5-7 days. Light exercise resumes at 4 weeks. Full chest activity (heavy lifting, intense workouts) at 6-8 weeks. Final contour settles over 3 months.
