What is revision rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a form of plastic surgery that changes the shape of the nose. While rhinoplasty is usually done for cosmetic reasons, it is sometimes done to correct a deviated septum or other structural issues with your nose. The procedure is often referred to as a "nose job".
Unfortunately, rhinoplasty surgery doesn't always go as planned. There are many instances where patients are unhappy with the look and feel of their nose after surgery. Revision rhinoplasty corrects the previous nose surgery to give you the look you desire. In some cases, an initial rhinoplasty procedure results in damaged cartilage or scar tissue. A revision procedure can correct these structural issues.

There are multiple surgical approaches available for rhinoplasty. Dr. Troell will choose the right approach for your needs, based on the results of your first rhinoplasty and your desired results.
Open Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty uses an incision on the columella, which is the piece of cartridge between the nostrils. While it does leave a small scar, this approach is often necessary for revision rhinoplasty that requires significant structural changes to the nose.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty uses small incisions inside the nostril, which results in no visible scars and a shorter recovery period. This approach works well for simple, straightforward rhinoplasty procedures.
Benefits of Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty offers many benefits for patients who are unhappy with a previous nose job.
Prior to your revision rhinoplasty, Dr. Troell will work with you to learn more about your desired look. This procedure will result in a symmetrical, balanced nose that suits your face shape.
A poorly performed rhinoplasty can make breathing problems worse rather than correcting them. Revision rhinoplasty will open up your nasal passageways for more comfortable breathing.
Ideally, rhinoplasty should help you feel more confident and happy with your appearance. Unfortunately, if your first rhinoplasty doesn't meet your expectations, it can have the opposite effect. A revision procedure addresses your concerns to give you the confidence boost you desire.
Expectations on The Day of Your Revision Rhinoplasty
Prior to your revision surgery, you will have a consultation with Dr. Troell. During your consultation, we will do a brief health screening, and we'll also discuss your expectations and goals for the procedure.
Revision rhinoplasty takes longer to complete than your initial rhinoplasty. Expect the procedure to take anywhere from four to six hours. Due to the length of the procedure, patients will usually receive general anesthesia. This means that you will be completely asleep for the entire surgery. You will need to avoid eating or drinking in the hours leading up to the procedure - our anesthesiologist will give you detailed instructions before coming in.
During the surgery, Dr. Troell will reshape the cartilage, tissue, and even the bone in your nose to achieve your desired look and structure. In rare cases, we will perform a cartilage graft from another part of the body. This replaces cartilage lost during the initial surgery. Once the surgery is complete, we will close the incisions using stitches.
Revision rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, which means that you will get to return home after surgery. However, you will need a friend or family member to take you to and from the appointment. After surgery, you will feel somewhat disoriented as the anesthesia wears off.
Recovery From Revision Rhinoplasty - What to Expect After
The initial recovery period for revision rhinoplasty lasts for about two weeks. We recommend taking time away from work, school, and your normal routine for the first seven to 10 days. You will need a family member or friend to help you with basic household tasks for the first few days after surgery.
You will need to wear a splint for approximately one week after surgery. We will also provide packing and a drip pad to wear under your nose to catch drainage. You can remove the drip pad after approximately two days. You will also need to sleep on your back with your head elevated to keep congestion and swelling to a minimum.
You will experience bruising, swelling, and mild pain in your nose in the days after surgery. In most cases, the pain is manageable with over-the-counter medications. However, we will prescribe pain medication if OTC solutions are not effective. You can also use an ice pack to manage the swelling.
These symptoms will peak about three days after surgery and slowly subside in the weeks following. You will also feel very congested and may struggle to breathe through your nose after surgery. This is normal, and your breathing will improve after about two weeks. You should avoid blowing your nose, exercising, or heavy lifting until you are cleared by Dr. Troell to do so.
You should be able to resume your normal routine after about two weeks. However, you won't see the final results of your rhinoplasty for six months to a year, as it takes time for the nose to settle.
