What is CO2 Laser Treatment?
Carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers are a popular way to treat fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and other skin concerns. The lasers work by resurfacing the skin and stimulates the creation of collagen, which makes the skin smoother and more elastic. This minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving the skin a more even tone and a more youthful look.

There are two types of laser resurfacing available. Both are very precise, and the right option for you will depend on your individual skin tone.
Fractional Laser
A fractional laser uses very small microbeams of light. This targets small sections of skin, without putting undue stress on the surrounding areas. They are best for patients who have sensitive skin conditions, such as melasma or extensive acne scarring.
Ablative Laser
Ablative lasers are much more intense than fractional lasers. They use a powerful beam of light to vaporize the top layer of skin and stimulate the skin underneath. Ablative lasers produce more dramatic results than fractional lasers, but they also may be too abrasive for those with sensitive skin types.

Am I a Good Candidate for CO2 Laser Treatments?
Good candidates for these resurfacing treatments should be adults in generally good health. Patients should have skin care concerns they would like to address, such as signs of aging or acne scarring. CO2 lasers are not safe for patients with skin cancer or other serious underlying skin conditions. Additionally, the laser may not be suitable for those with very dark skin tones.
Patients should also have reasonable expectations for the procedure. While these laser treatments will improve your overall skin tone, they will not completely change your appearance.
Benefits of CO2 Laser Treatments
CO2 laser treatments are an effective way to achieve smoother, more even skin. Here are some of the benefits of this cosmetic procedure.
CO2 laser skin resurfacing minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and age spots. This results in a more consistent, even skin tone.
Lasers stimulate collagen production, which improves skin elasticity. This extra collagen makes the skin look "tighter", so wrinkles, fine lines, and loose skin are less noticeable.
CO2 laser treatments usually take less than two hours to complete. While it takes two to four weeks to see results, you'll be able to return to your normal routine after just a few days.
Many patients find that laser treatments help them feel happier with the look and feel of their skin, which boosts their overall confidence level.
Expectations on the Day of Your CO2 Laser Procedure
Prior to your treatment, you will have a consultation with our team to make sure that laser resurfacing is right for you. We will also provide detailed preparation instructions - you will need to avoid tanning or spending extensive amounts of time in the sun in the weeks leading up to treatment. You may also need to avoid certain medications, such as antivirals or certain antibiotics.
On the day of your surgery, we will start by cleansing your skin. Laser treatment is somewhat painful, so you will receive a local anesthetic and a sedative to make the treatment more comfortable. You will also need to wear protective goggles to protect your eyes from the light. We will carefully move the laser wand across the skin to treat the target areas.
After the procedure, we will apply a topical antibiotic and a dressing to protect your skin and help it heal. Once the sedative has worn off, you will be able to drive yourself home from the procedure.
Recovery from CO2 Laser Resurfacing
After the procedure it will feel like you have a very severe sunburn, and your skin will be red, swollen, and itchy. The treated area will start to peel after a few days and may even ooze. Avoid picking at your skin, even as it starts to peel.
We will prescribe a dedicated skincare regimen that you will need to follow during your initial recovery period.
You will start to see results after about two to three weeks. Continue to minimize sun exposure while you're outdoors with protective clothing and sunscreen.

Your skin will scab and peel for the first two weeks after the procedure. If you work from home, you may be able to return to your job after the first few days. If you work in person, you will need to take at least a week off to let your skin heal.
The risks of CO2 laser treatments are minimal, particularly with a fractional laser. However, there is a slight risk of infection as well as long-term redness and hyperpigmentation. Being diligent with your skincare routine will help you avoid these risks.
Most patients will only need one treatment to see results. We may recommend a second treatment for very deep wrinkles or acne scarring, but it is usually not necessary.
Most patients opt for full-face treatments with the CO2 laser. Some patients also opt to treat the neck.
