What is Otoplasty
Otoplasty is a form of cosmetic surgery that changes the shape and positioning of the ears. Plastic surgeons use a variety of techniques to reposition the cartilage and reshape the ears.
This procedure is often done on ears that protrude significantly from the head. In this case, otoplasty moves the ears closer to the head to make them less prominent. Otoplasty is also done to correct misshapen or underdeveloped ears.

We offer several different types of otoplasty to correct different ear concerns.
Ear Pinning
Ear pinning is one of the most common forms of otoplasty. This procedure corrects protruding ears by moving the back of the ear toward the head. This procedure is also used for ear reshaping.
Ear Reduction
This procedure shrinks very large, prominent ears by removing cartilage. This otoplasty procedure can also be used to reshape your ears as desired.
Ear Augmentation
This type of otoplasty is for those with small, underdeveloped ears. For this procedure, we take a cartilage graft from another part of the body to expand the upper ear and reshape it.
Otoplasty candidacy
Am I a Good Candidate For Otoplasty?
Ideal otoplasty candidates should have misshapen or protruding ears that they want to change. They should be at least five years old, as this is when the ears finish developing. Otoplasty candidates should be in good health, without any underlying conditions that could interfere with the anesthesia or recovery process. Otoplasty candidates also need to be non-smokers.
Additionally, otoplasty candidates should have realistic expectations for the procedure. While this ear surgery will change the size and shape of your ears, it won't change your entire appearance.
Benefits of Otoplasty
Otoplasty offers many benefits for patients who want to change the look of their ears.
If your ears are particularly prominent, ear pinning surgery will reposition and reshape them so they are in proportion to the size of your head.
This plastic surgery will also correct misshapen ears by repositioning ear cartilage. Misshapen ears can happen as a result of congenital birth defects or as a result of traumatic injuries.
Some people find that oversized or misshapen ears negatively affect their self-esteem. In this case, successful ear reshaping surgery can give you a boost of confidence.
The results of this surgical procedure are permanent and will last a lifetime.
Expectations on the Day of Your Otoplasty
Prior to your surgery, we will have a consultation with you to determine what type of otoplasty is best and conduct a brief health screening. We'll also provide detailed instructions for the day of your surgery.
Otoplasty takes anywhere from one to three hours to complete, and you'll be able to go home on the same day. In most cases, the surgery is done with general anesthesia, which means you will be completely asleep. In some cases, we may opt for a combination of local anesthesia and sedation instead. After the procedure, you will still be drowsy from the anesthesia, so you will need a friend or family member to drive you home.
During the surgery, Dr. Troell will make small incisions behind the ear or inside the ear, taking care to minimize future scarring. For ear augmentations, we will also take a cartilage graft from another part of the body. Then, we will carefully reshape and position the ear, removing or adding cartilage as needed. Finally, we will close the incisions with sutures and put bandages on your ears.
Recovery From Otoplasty - What to Expect After
Most patients take a week away from work or school after surgery. For the first few days after surgery, you will need to keep the dressing on your ears. You will experience some pain, swelling, bruising, and itching, although these symptoms will start to subside after the first week. Take pain medication as directed by Dr. Troell.
Sleep on your back with your head elevated to avoid putting pressure on your ears. A surgical pillow can help keep you comfortable while you rest. You'll also want to avoid tight pull-on clothing that could get stuck on your ears.
You will have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Troell after the first week to check on your incisions and swelling. You will need to continue to wear a headband at night for several weeks to protect your ears. You should also avoid strenuous exercise until you've been cleared by Dr. Troell.

While otoplasty does result in some scarring, these scars are hidden behind the ears or in the folds of the ears. This means they won't be prominent once the scars have healed.
Since the ears finish developing by age five, patients can get otoplasty at a young age. This is ideal because the cartilage is softer and easier to move.
Patients will need to wear a special headband for six to eight weeks after surgery while sleeping. You will also need to wear a headband during this period while exercising.
When compared to other surgeries, otoplasty is not particularly painful. In most cases, pain is manageable with over-the-counter pain medications.
Insurance Coverage for Otoplasty
Most otoplasty procedures are done for cosmetic reasons, which means they aren't covered by health insurance. Patients will need to pay out-of-pocket, but there are financing options available to make the procedure more manageable.
However, if otoplasty is necessary to treat an injury or improve your hearing, it may be covered by insurance. You will need to contact your insurance provider directly for more information about coverage options.
