What are Chin and Cheek Implants?
Chin and cheek implants are forms of plastic surgery that change the shape of the face. Many patients who opt for this surgery have a weak chin or unpronounced cheekbones. These facial implants create stronger facial contours and balanced proportions.
This is done by carefully inserting small implants made of medical-grade silicone into the target treatment area. We may also add dermal filler to further balance your proportions and achieve your desired look.

Chin implants and cheek implants are the two most common forms of facial augmentation surgery. These surgeries use similar techniques but target different areas of the face. Some patients opt for both, but most choose one or the other based on their individual face structure.
Chin Implant Surgery
This surgery is sometimes referred to as chin augmentation. It is most popular among patients who have a very weak chin in relation to their other facial features. It can also reduce the appearance of a double chin.
With this surgery, the implant is placed directly on the chin bone at the base of your jawline. The implant sits under the skin, with very small incisions done below the chin or inside the mouth. We may also recommend fillers or fat transfer in your chin for a more natural look.
Cheek Implant Surgery
Cheek augmentation adds height and volume to your cheeks, creating the appearance of more prominent cheekbones. Many patients opt for this surgery to address cheeks that have lost volume with age.
In this procedure, your surgeon will place the implants in your cheeks using an incision in your mouth or under your eyelid. In many cases, we'll also use fillers or fat transfer to further augment the cheeks, or as an alternative to implants.
Chin or cheek implant candidacy
Am I a Good Candidate for Chin or Cheek Implants?
Good candidates for cheek or chin enhancement want to change the overall appearance of their face. They might be unhappy with the size or shape of their chin or cheeks and want to make them more prominent. They may also want to make their face more balanced and proportionate.
It's very important that cosmetic surgery candidates have a positive, realistic outlook about the procedure. While this surgery will change some aspects of your face, it won't completely change your appearance or solve all your problems.
Additionally, patients should be in good health, without any chronic conditions that could interfere with the success of the procedure. Candidates should also be non-smokers.
Benefits of Cheek and Chin Implants
If you're unhappy with the current appearance of your face, there are many benefits to getting cheek or chin implants. Here's why many of our patients opt for this procedure.
Many patients opt for this surgery because it creates a more balanced, proportional face structure. For example, a patient with a weak chin might have a larger nose or eyes. Using implants to make the chin larger will create a balanced face structure that's more visually appealing.
It's normal for skin to sag or droop as we get older. This often happens because the skin produces less collagen, resulting in less elasticity. Weight fluctuations also become more common with age.
While chin and cheek implants won't completely remove these signs of aging, they can make them less noticeable. For example, cheek implants will make the face rounder, which minimizes sagging. A chin implant will minimize the appearance of a double chin.
If you're unhappy with the shape of your face, it can negatively affect your self-esteem. Getting facial implants can help you feel more confident in your looks and give you a boost of self-esteem.
Expectations on the Day of Your Procedure
Prior to your surgery, you will have a consultation with Dr. Troell and our team. At this appointment, we will perform a basic health check to ensure you are a good candidate for surgery. We will also discuss your aesthetic goals and preferences and develop a plan for your surgery.
There are two anesthesia options for face implant procedures. If your surgery is done under general anesthesia, you will be completely asleep. If the surgery is done under local anesthesia and sedation, your face will be numb and you will be very relaxed. We will discuss your anesthesia options during your initial consultation. You may need to avoid eating or drinking for several hours leading up to your surgery.
Your surgery will take anywhere from one to three hours to complete. Once the procedure is complete, we will use very small sutures to close the incision. You will likely need a friend or family member to drive you home and help you for the first few hours after surgery
Recovery From Cheek or Chin Augmentation - What to Expect After
After your surgery, you will need to keep bandages on your surgical site for at least one day. You will notice swelling and bruising around the surgical site, as well as a sensation of tightness or pulling in the skin around your implant. You can use ice packs for short periods of time to manage these symptoms, which will slowly start to improve after the third or fourth day. We will also prescribe pain medication to help keep you comfortable during the initial healing process.
Depending on where your incision is, you may not be able to eat solid foods for the first few days after surgery. Follow all instructions provided by our surgical team and stick to a liquid diet when necessary. You will also need to sleep on your back with your head elevated for the first few days.
Most people take about one week away from work, school, or their normal routine. You will also need to avoid exercise or other strenuous activity for about two weeks, or until cleared by our office. However, you should go on gentle walks to improve blood flow.
The full recovery process takes about six months. At this point, your scars will fade and you will be able to see the final results of your surgery.

These implants are designed to last a lifetime, so the results are permanent.
Most chin and cheek procedures involve incisions inside your mouth, which will affect your ability to eat. The swelling and soreness from your chin implant will also make it difficult to chew. In most cases, you'll need to stick to a liquid diet for two to three days after surgery, slowly adding soft foods back into your diet. Avoid hard, crunchy foods like apples and nuts until you've been cleared by Dr. Troell.
In most cases, the incisions for your implants will be inside your mouth, leaving no visible scarring. In cases where the incisions are outside the mouth, the scars will be very small and discreet.
Many patients will experience some numbness for about one week after surgery. After this point, sensation and mobility will start to return.
Insurance Coverage for Chin and Cheek Implants
Since chin and cheek implants are cosmetic procedures, they won't be covered by insurance. This means that patients will need to pay for these procedures out-of-pocket. However, there are financing options available to make the cost more manageable.
