What is a Breast Lift
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a plastic surgery procedure that changes the shape and positioning of the breasts. During the breast lift procedure, the surgeon adjusts the breast tissue, skin, and nipples to create a lifted effect. They may also remove excess skin.
Breast lift surgery does not change your breast size - it just adjusts the breast tissue you already have. However, breast lift surgery can be paired with breast augmentation or a breast reduction to change the size of your chest.

Types of Breast Lifts
There are several different techniques used for breast lifts, depending on the shape of the existing breasts and the patient's desired results.
Lollipop Lift
This technique uses a lollipop-shaped incision around the areola and down the center of the breast. Although it does leave a small scar, it is very effective for minimizing sagging and creating a firm, lifted appearance.
Benelli Lift
This technique is similar to the Lollipop lift, but only uses a circular incision around the areola. This option is slightly less invasive than a Lollipop lift. It is very effective at correcting mild sagging and asymmetry.
Crescent Lift
The Crescent lift is another minimally invasive procedure to correct mild sagging and nipple asymmetry. This procedure involves a small crescent-shaped incision on top of your areola.
Anchor Lift
This is the most invasive type of breast lift and is best for patients who experience drastic sagging or drooping. It is similar to a Lollipop lift, but the surgeon will also make an incision along the lower crease of the breast, forming an anchor shape. If you're looking to drastically change your breast shape, this may be the right procedure for you.
Breast lift candidacy
Am I a Good Candidate For a Breast Lift?
Patients are good candidates for a breast lift if the breasts sag, point downward, or have a flattened shape. Many ideal breast lift candidates also have stretched, loose skin on their breasts. A breast lift can also correct asymmetry in the breast shape or nipple position.
To get a breast lift or any other form of cosmetic surgery, you'll need to be in reasonably good health and avoid smoking. Prior to the procedure, the plastic surgeon and their team will conduct an initial examination and take your health history to ensure that you're a good fit.
Benefits of a Breast Lift
Many patients find that a breast lift boosts their confidence and helps them feel happier with their appearance. A breast lift results in a more youthful appearance, and we'll work with you to ensure that the final results fit your unique needs and preferences. For patients with small breasts, a breast lift can be paired with a breast implant and augmentation to create a more voluminous appearance.
Sagging, heavy breasts can also be physically uncomfortable. In some cases, they can even cause skin irritation. Breast lifts help minimize this discomfort, especially when paired with a breast reduction. Many patients also find that a breast lift helps them feel more comfortable in specific styles of clothing.
Expectations on the Day of Your Breast Lift Procedure
In most cases, breast lifts are performed under general anesthesia, which means that you won't be awake during the surgery. In some cases, we perform the surgery with a combination of local anesthesia and a sedative. You will need to fast prior to the surgery due to the anesthesia. Your anesthesiologist will tell you how long to fast prior to the procedure.
The breast lift procedure typically takes two to three hours to complete. Once the anesthesia has been administered, the surgeon makes the appropriate incisions, removes excess skin, and reshapes the breast tissue. The surgeon will then close the incisions with stitches or a surgical adhesive. Your surgeon will aim to minimize the amount of scarring from the surgery.
You will be able to return home on the day of your procedure. However, you will be very tired and may feel woozy from the anesthesia, so you will need someone to drive you home. You will also need a friend or family member to help you through the first few days of recovery.
Recovery From A Breast Lift - What to Expect After
After a breast lift, you'll need to take at least one week away from work or school to rest. During the first few days after surgery, you'll experience swelling, bruising, and moderate pain. Your doctor will prescribe or recommend medication to help you manage the pain.
You will need to keep your bandages on for the first few days after surgery. Your doctor will tell you when it is safe to remove the bandages, as well as when it is safe to shower normally. You will also need to wear surgical bras for the first month after recovery to keep your breasts safe and supported.
You will have very limited arm mobility for the first week after surgery. This means that you will need someone to help you with basic household chores like cooking and self-care. Additionally, you will need to opt for button-down or zip-up shirts, rather than pullovers. At night, sleep on your back to avoid putting extra strain on your breasts. Supportive pillows may help you sleep more comfortably.
Once you return to your daily routine, you'll need to continue to avoid exercise and strenuous activities until you've been cleared by your surgeon. Additionally, the skin on your breasts will be very sensitive, so you'll need to avoid extensive sun exposure and wear sunscreen when you do go outside.

The initial recovery process for a breast lift lasts for approximately two weeks. During this period, you will experience swelling and bruising. You'll continue to experience some numbness and tenderness up to six weeks after surgery. This is also when you'll start to see the final results of the surgery.
A breast lift on its own does not add or take away any breast volume. However, many patients go down one cup size due to a change in their breast shape.
You'll need to wear a surgical compression bra for approximately six weeks after your surgery. This bra should be worn as often as possible, including at night. Surgical compression bras help maintain the results of the surgery and protect your breasts as they are healing. Your surgeon will let you know when it is safe to stop wearing a bra.
In most cases, patients are able to breastfeed safely after their breast lift has fully healed. However, pregnancy and breastfeeding can dramatically change the shape and size of your breasts. Because of this, it's usually more efficient to wait until after you're finished having children to have a breast lift.
The amount of scarring you experience will depend on the incisions used during the procedure. Some techniques only leave scarring around the nipple, while others leave vertical scars along the breast or horizontal scars under the breast. Dr. Troell will discuss potential scarring with you during your consultation. Most scars fade drastically within one year of surgery.
Insurance Coverage for Breast Lifts
Breast lifts are not typically covered by health insurance. This is because they are a cosmetic procedure, rather than a medically necessary one. The only exception to this is patients who have had breast cancer. If you undergo a breast lift as part of a post-cancer breast reconstruction, your insurance may cover part of the cost.
Because breast lifts are not covered by insurance, patients will need to pay out of pocket for these procedures. We accept a wide variety of payment methods.
We also have financing available through Care Credit and Alphaeon Credit. These financing options allow you to break the cost of your procedure down into manageable monthly payments (with interest).
As low as $220 / month*
*Based on someone with excellent credit and a loan term of 36 months. Actual monthly payments will vary per individual depending on credit score, loan term and other factors.
