What is Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a form of plastic surgery designed to increase breast size. Many patients also opt for this surgery to make their breasts more symmetrical.
The breast augmentation procedure is typically done with implants or fat tissue transfer. Implants are inserted under the breast tissue and sometimes underneath the chest muscles as well. Patients can choose between a silicone implant or saline implant based on their needs and preferences. Fat tissue transfer takes fat from other parts of the body and transfers it to the breasts.
For patients who have lost natural breast tissue due to cancer, augmentation helps restore the chest shape and boost confidence. This surgery is also popular among patients whose breast size has changed as a result of weight fluctuations or pregnancy.
Breast augmentation is often paired with a breast lift. While augmentation increases the size of the breast, a breast lift repositions the breast skin and tissue to correct sagging or drooping.

Types of breast augmentation
There are a few different variations of the breast augmentation procedure. Dr. Troell will discuss all options with you during your consultation to determine which option best fits your needs.
Silicone Implants
Silicone implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel material. Many patients prefer silicone implants because they mimic the natural look and feel of breast tissue. Patients must be at least 22 years old to get a silicone breast implant.
Saline Implants
Saline implants consist of a silicone gel filled with saline fluid. These implants are available to patients 18 years or older. In the extremely rare case of an implant rupture, saline absorbs naturally into the body. This makes saline implants very safe. However, it's important to note that saline implants tend not to look as natural as silicone implants.
Fat Transfer
Fat transfer breast augmentation surgery offers an alternative for patients who don't want to get implants. This procedure uses liposuction to capture fat from other parts of the body, typically the legs or abdomen. Then, this fat is transferred to the breast.
Fat transfer breast augmentation surgery produces subtle, natural results, which makes it very appealing for many patients. The nature of the procedure allows the surgeon to adjust the shape of the breasts more dramatically than with an implant. Additionally, fat transfer is permanent, making it a longer-lasting option than implants.

Am I a Good Candidate For Breast Augmentation?
In order to get breast augmentation, you'll need to be in good physical and mental health. You'll also need to be over the age of 22 for silicone implants and over the age of 18 for other forms of breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is ideal for those have naturally small, asymmetrical, or sagging breasts.
Prior to your cosmetic surgery, you'll have a breast augmentation consultation to ensure that you don't have any chronic conditions or injuries that could interfere with your healing. Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption could also make you ineligible for this surgery.
In addition to being in good physical health, you'll also need to be in good mental health and have realistic expectations for the procedure. Breast augmentation can boost your confidence and help you feel more comfortable in your body, but it will not drastically change your entire appearance or fix more serious self-esteem issues.
Benefits of Breast Augmentation
The biggest benefit of breast augmentation is an increase in the size of your breasts. In many cases, breast enhancement procedures will also give your breasts a perkier, more lifted appearance. For patients with naturally asymmetrical breasts, this surgery creates a more even, balanced look.
If you feel unhappy with your current breast size, this surgery can help you feel more comfortable and confident in your body. Many patients find that breast augmentation balances their proportions and helps them feel more confident in their favorite clothes.
Expectations on the Day of Breast Augmentation Procedure
Prior to scheduling your surgery, you will have a consultation with your plastic surgeon. During this consultation, they will determine if you are a good candidate for surgery, check your health, and give you a detailed explanation of what to expect.
Breast augmentation is done using general anesthesia, but you'll be able to return home the day of your surgery. To prepare for anesthesia, you won't be able to eat or drink for several hours prior to the surgery.
During the procedure, you will be completely asleep. For surgeries using a breast implant, the doctor will make an incision, which they will use to position the implant under your natural breast tissue. If you have a saline breast implant, they will fill the implant after it has been properly positioned. Then, the surgeon will close and bandage the incision.
Recovery From Breast Augmentation Surgery - What To Expect
After your breast surgery, you will need to take time to rest and recover. While you will be able to go home on the day of your surgery, you will need a friend or family member to assist you with basic tasks. You should avoid returning to work or school for at least one week after breast implant surgery.
After surgery, you will feel sore, and you will experience swelling and bruising around your chest. Your doctor may prescribe medication to help with the pain. During the first few days of your breast augmentation recovery, you will also have limited mobility in your chest or arms. Wear zip-up or button-up shirts to avoid lifting your arms.
You will need to sleep on your back and keep your torso elevated while you sleep to avoid putting pressure on your new breast implants. You'll also need to wear a special compression bra for the first few weeks after surgery as well
Swelling and pain will dramatically decrease after the first few days. Avoid exercising or other strenuous activities until you've been cleared by your plastic surgeon.
In most cases, you'll be able to fully resume your normal routine four to six weeks after surgery. However, the exact recovery time will vary depending on your breast implant size and other individual factors. Your breast implants should fully settle after about three months.

Most patients experience some mild pain and discomfort in the first few weeks following breast augmentation surgery. However, this pain will subside quickly as your body heals and swelling goes down. We will recommend pain medication to help keep you comfortable as you recover.
The right breast implant size for you will depend on a variety of factors, including your proportions and your desired cup size. Prior to surgery, we will discuss your options and find the right size for your body. We'll also help you choose between round and teardrop implant shapes.
Many patients experience a decrease in nipple sensation during the initial recovery period after breast augmentation. For most patients, this sensation does return. However, long-term loss of nipple sensation is a rare but possible side effect.
Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure, which means that patients can return home on the day of the procedure. However, you will need a family member or friend to drive you home and help you with basic tasks while you recover.
Insurance Coverage for Breast Augmentation
Since breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery, health insurance generally does not cover it. This means that patients will be responsible for the entire cost of breast augmentation.
There are exceptions to this rule for people who have struggled with breast cancer. Insurance may cover the cost of breast implants for those who have had mastectomies.
